There are billions waiting to be spent, but there's nothing happening. The drainage system is totally screwed up, will take many billions and time to fix. The Corps of Engineers just admitted that the emergency pumps put in last year don't work and didn't work during the height of hurricane season. We got lucky b/c there were no storms last year thanks to El Nino, but it's gone this year so we'll find out how the COE has screwed us this year when a real hurricane season accosts us. The streets are a mess. One would think that with all those billions, the stop lights and potholes could be fixed. If you think so, you'd be wrong. Yes, some lawyers are doing well. I am very busy thanks to Katrina. But that work will dry up in a couple of years. With a city that has fewer people in it, where will the law business for younger lawyers come from? I'm not too worried as I can always shake some trees and watch fruit fall down, but there will be lots of unemployed lawyers. Doctors have left in droves. Hospitals--don't even get me started. Nagin. He is a racist lunatic. I had high hopes for him, but he's a hopeless empty suit. Real estate is doing well? Give me some of what he's smoking because every block in the good, high and dry, neighborhoods has at least two homes for sale which have been on the market for ages. I'm not selling, but all those people who are leaving are, and their houses are simply not moving. I know, one of the city's top agents is my neighbor. Sure, there are a few things going well, and thank God for Hispanics, legal and illegal, but overall I do not at all share the writer's enthusiasm. Oh, well. Going to Galatoire's tonight, eat, drink, pretend everything is fine.
