The general public can get frangible ammunition for personal protection that does not over penetrate as well.

Hollow point ammunition would be good for preventing overpenetration. That would be useful for handguns and rifles.

Disagree. Off the shelf hollow points are very powerful. Better to do self loading for in-home defense and adjust the load down to decrease the muzzle velocity.
Or use a shotgun with birdshot as Ish recommended.
We are taking about shooting from distances of perhaps 15 feet or less. That does not require a big load to be effective.

I keep a loaded handgun handy too, but my first choice is the semi shotgun. I believe the sound of the pump action in a dark silent house will send most bad guys jumping out the nearest window.

The military uses a bullet for special occasions (raiding buildings) which can not ricochet. It turns to powder when it strikes something hard like a brick. However, bullet is still deadly since it stays solid when striking flesh.

We were talking about home defense. Who has brick walls in their kids' bedrooms?

Before I bought my 45 I had a 22 Magnum which I loaded with every other bullet a hollow point. Told my wife, if I was away on a trip she was to lock the bedroom door at night and if anyone broke in just fire through the door. The full jacket would penetrate, but the hollow point wouldnt which is why I alternated them. jdn
