"BRCM didn't invent the power saving feature; the patent was bought in a bundle of stuff for $24 MILLION."

With a little bit of searching I found ...

"Broadcom Acquires UNOVA Patents -- December 27, 2002

UNOVA, a corporation specializing in wired and wireless automated data collection, has sold approximately 150 of its domestic and foreign patents and patent applications to Broadcom Corp. for $24 million. ... <snip>

Although there are only six of an original eighteen patents remaining in the Broadcom v. Qualcomm lawsuit(s), I became curious as to the assignees (original owners). The count:
6 - Broadcom Corp.
5 - Norand Corp.
7 - Intermec IP Corp.

Western Atlas acquired both Intermec and Norand and later spun off UNOVA, so it appears 12 of those 18 patents were acquired in the $24 million purchase mentioned above.

Three of the six remaining patents-in-suit remain unidentified by this board AFAIK.
