Maurice, that last little exchange you had with longshort is effecting you to the negative.
WE all must take our share of stupidity, because at times, we all ...just are.

When your grandson gets to be motorcicle age, (must watch, "The Fastest Indian")you will fall into that camp when "the parents" insist that their son must wear a brain bucket, or no cicle riding, and Maurice says "there will be no sheeple cranium covering in this family."

Maurice will lose. LOL

The parents will say ""where does he get these wild ideas from?...no son of ours will be free to be stupid.. he can wait....I know, he gets those wild ideas from the internet.""
You been busted for not wearing your seat belt in the nany state yet?<g> You show em eh!

M in Toronto it is the law that folks wear a bicycle helmet. It is often ignored, more so than adhered to, especially among children, but I'm sure the politicians felt good about the time spent earning their pay... There is no enforcement, hence a big waste of time.

OTOH I understand gg's point about the health care angle, and I agree. If you want publicly funded health care as we have, then you need to be prepared to mitigate the cost.

I know I know we can get into a debate that we are penalising smokers or the obese etc if taken to far.. but benefits come with strings. Ya know we say car driving is a privilege but public health care is a right. Of course that is wrong. They are both privileges.

as an aside I used to be a rabid biker (the motorised type :O) I doubt if a helmet would have done much for foolish me going down the highway @ 100 mph (yes not kmph)... OTOH a bumble bee hurts a lot at that speed, as I know from experience. I wore a visored helmet after that.
