Gonzales Date of Birth: August 4, 1955 Place of Birth: San Antonio, Texas Judge Al Gonzales, the U.S. Attorney-General, served as Counsel to President George W. Bush from January 2001 through Bush's re-election. The son of a construction worker, Gonzales was born in San Antonio, Texas, and was raised as one of eight children in a two-bedroom house in Houston. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1973-1975 and attended the Air Force Academy from 1975-1977. After deciding that he preferred to fight with words rather than guns, Gonzales transferred to Rice University in Houston and later studied at Harvard Law School. Gonzales was recognized as the 1999 Latino Lawyer of the Year by the Hispanic National Bar Association, and received a Presidential Citation from the State Bar of Texas in 1997 for his legal work addressing the needs of the indigent. Gonzales joined Vinson & Elkins, where he worked as once of the firm's first Hispanic attorneys from 1982-1995. Following his introduction to George W. Bush, he left business law to serve as the Texas governor's General Counsel from 1995-1997. Among other issues, Gonzales advised George W. Bush on dozens of death penalty cases. From 1997-1998, Gonzales served as Texas Secretary of Served and was the Governor's liaison on Mexico and consultant on border issues. In 1999, Bush was appointed Gonzales to the Texas Supreme Court, where he presided as a Justice until 2001. Following George W. Bush's election as President of the United States, Gonzales was appointed as White House Counsel and Assistant to the President. Alberto Gonzales is married to Rebecca and is the father of three sons.
