One quick way to tell how truck based SUVs and large pickups are being used - in farm and ranch areas, at least 1/3 of the SUVs will have trailer hitches, for towing equipmnet trailers, horses, cattle, and whatever.

In urban settings, usually under 5% of the SUVs have trailer hitches.

This really applies only to the big truck based SUVs, you can tow much with a car based SUV or a minivan, the towing loads would rip some of them appart.
