2007-03-27 08:40 (New York)

By Rose Skelton
March 27 (Bloomberg) -- First Quantum Minerals Ltd., a
copper miner whose shares have risen 22-fold in five years,
increased production at its Guelb Moghrein mine in Mauritania to
4,200 metric tons in the first two months of 2007.
The mine started production on Oct. 5, initially operating
at 66 percent of its design capacity and producing about 1,650
tons of copper, the Vancouver-based company said in an e-mailed
statement.
The mine, 250 kilometers (155 miles) northeast of
Mauritania's capital Nouakchott, is currently producing about
2,100 metric tons of copper a month, it said in the statement
received March 22. The mine has the capacity to produce 2,500
tons a month, it said.
Guelb Moghrein is also producing 4,600 ounces of gold a
month, the company added.
