Sen. John McCain: Pat Tillman Death Details a 'Travesty'

Republican presidential candidate John McCain on Monday criticized mistakes made by high-ranking Army officers who passed along misleading and inaccurate information in reporting the death of Army Ranger Pat Tillman, a former NFL star.

Calling those mistakes part of an "inexcusable cover-up," McCain praised Tillman's mother, Mary, for challenging the official military report on her son's death.

"It was a travesty that the events surrounding his death were covered up, if not distorted," McCain said.

McCain, who was in Texas to raise money for his campaign, also spoke with reporters about his opposition to setting a timetable for withdrawing troops from Iraq. He also continued to play down expectations about his campaign's fundraising, the results of which must be reported by Saturday.
