Last September, there was an Iranian incursion into Iraq where they attacked a patrol of the 101st Airborne, apparently trying to capture hostages.

This is a standard practice, and makes sense for them. They use the fact that a democracy cares about its citizens to capture some hostages. They themselves would not care about Iranian hostages, unless the prisoners had valuable intelligence, which makes it much harder for the US or Britain to reply in kind.
