A correctly done swat on the butt for a 4 year old doesn't have to hurt. It just has to startle and scare enough to teach certain behavior just isn't going to be tolerated.

And they are totally insufferable by the teens. I think the majority of obeying and morals are instilled by 5. Fail in those first 5 and you will fight it for the rest of their lives as will they.
