I remember my great grandmother being diagnosed with lung cancer. Doctor's said we are going to remove your lung and anything else that looks suspicious and then we are going to radiate and chemo you and then we will see what happens. She said I think not and lived a bit over a year but all but the last 2 weeks were doing what she wanted to do and pain free.

Sometimes people with no religious belief who feel this is all their is can just not force themselves to give up. A friend of mine who finally succumbed to the treatment was that way and it was very difficult to watch at the end.
