MP3 market sees boom

EE Times
03/28/2007

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Portable Media Players (PMP)/MP3 players are expected to more than double in terms of shipments between 2005 and 2011, according to iSuppli Corp.

Global PMP/MP3 player unit shipments will rise to 268.6 million units in 2011, expanding at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13 percent from 128.7 million units in 2005, iSuppli predicts. In 2007, player shipments are expected to rise to 216.9 million units, up 21.8 percent from 178.1 million in 2006.

Global PMP/MP3 factory revenue will rise to $21.5 billion by 2011, expanding at a CAGR of 7.4 percent from $14 billion in 2005. PMP/MP3 revenue this year will rise to $20.6 billion, up 14.4 percent from $18 billion in 2006.

''A major driving factor behind this growth is the fact that PMP/MP3 players take advantage of the Internet more than other consumer electronic devices, giving users the ability to quickly and easily sample, acquire and share media,'' said Chris Crotty, senior analyst for consumer electronics at iSuppli, in a statement . ''Other reasons for the rapid market expansion include the expanding catalog of available content and component cost reductions that are making the players more affordable for consumers.''

Asyst's Automated Material Handling System Selected by Toshiba for Its Latest 300MM Fab in Yokkaichi, Japan
Monday March 5, 6:00 am ET

FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Asyst Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:ASYT - News), a leading supplier of integrated automation systems that enhance semiconductor and flat panel display manufacturing productivity, announced today that Asyst's automated material handling system (AMHS) has been selected for Toshiba's newest Fab 4 in Yokkaichi, Japan. The Toshiba system is expected to include significant segments of Asyst's next-generation conveyor technology for high-capacity material transport.

Installation of the system is expected to begin in the spring of 2007. When Fab 4 reaches its expected full production of NAND flash memory, it will be Asyst's largest semiconductor AMHS project ever. The company's largest semiconductor project to date is Toshiba's Fab 3, which currently is expanding to full capacity.

Steve Schwartz, chair and CEO of Asyst, said, "Toshiba is one of the world's largest and most technically advanced electronics manufacturers and has been a key customer for many years. We are delighted that our AMHS system was selected by Toshiba because of our experience in Fab 3 and our commitment to reduce cost and increase efficiency in both Fabs 3 and 4. Because of this, they have entrusted us with total responsibility for wafer transport, storage, and tool loading in their newest and largest factory. Coupled with our high penetration of IsoPort(TM) loadports and AdvanTag(TM) RFID systems at Toshiba, this AMHS win validates Asyst's market leadership in 300mm fab automation and in the rapidly growing 300mm market in Japan."
