My understanding was the option could be exercised at any time and once exercised the current contract was extended to the end of 2008. No other details have been released.

I have wondered about whether a creeping extension mechanism could be used by continuing royalty payments without formally acknowledging exercise of the option. But I suspect such action would only trigger Qualcomm to seek a legal determination that such action implies automatic exercise of the option. No one knows the exact wording of the contract or the option so folks are just left speculating about possible realities.

It won't be long before the next stage starts. Although, I'd be surprised to hear anything substantial on the matter until documents hit the desks of the various judiciaries. Unless work stoppage actions are initiated, that might well be 5 or so months down the road.

The important barrier these days is that defining the bottom for shareholder value because it is likely that shareholder pychie is going to be tested.
