I am not a pessimist as a rule but am becoming one about our economy and way of life.

Same here. I really wish there was an intelligent and articulate public figure in the Oval Office who could explain reality to the electorate in clear, concise language. Edit: bully pulpit is a proper and necessary role of the President. Reagan was superb at this. I'm enough of an optimist to believe that there are enough good people out there who would respond appropriately when they've been given the facts. :-)

As far as I'm concerned, the Bush administration has been a major disappointment in that regard. Allowing government growth to spiral ever further out of control is one thing. But when he talks about "ending our addiction to oil", it's a dumb and dangerous position to take, and only gives ammunition to those who want to cripple our standard of living and way of life.

Oil is the lifeblood of our economy. It's involved in every aspect of our comfortable existence. Calling life giving sustenance an "addiction" is either a sign of stupidity or ignorance (or political pandering), take your pick.

Policies have consequences and chickens come home to roost...
