In my case, it became difficult because although it was clear to me that I was to manage stands of trees in order to meet the landowners' objectives, it was not at all clear to the landowners what their objectives really were. The management assumed that the landowners with the loudest and most raucous voices were magically potent, so that's the way we went. Very frustrating. It was extremely frustrating for me, being absolutely committed to my professional ideals, that an enterprise that took 100 to 200 years to play out had objectives set by people who couldn't see past the end of their nose. That is, the people with the loudest, most raucous voices.
