My parents are still quite healthy so I should be some time off on them. I lost my last Grandparent in 99 which was a bummer. We had many more golf and fishing outings planned but I guess at 88 to just drop over isn't all bad.

If you grow up close to your parents and siblings, as I did, you always feel a sense of security knowing they are out there. I had my maternal grandparents well into my 30's. They were a wealth of knowledge to me. OTOH, I never knew my dad's father and his mother passed away in my late teens. Today, my only two grand daughters are 1200 miles away and they barely know who I am. Even though communications these days is such a simple thing, I still never hear from them. When I call there, they are always "gone".

"I also want them around long enough for my son to truly get to know them."

My mom had some health issues a number of years ago that they couldn't diagnose for over a year. We were fearful that we could lose her. I thought about losing mom and knew that I would be have a great loss, but I found that deep down inside, my biggest fear was that she would not be around to help instill the values into my children that only grandparents that have great relationships with their grandkids can do. They have a tremendous impact on all in their lives, but most of all the grandkids benefit the most. Luckily they finally resolved her health issues and she is doing well.
I've often talked with my kids and nieces and nephews about various life issues, and they have said their biggest fear is disappointing Nana and Granddad. They knew that if they did certain things, they would have to face their grandparents and they were more fearful of disappointing them more than their parents. It was great knowing how much respect the kids had for my mom and dad and what an influence my parents are on my kids and nieces and nephews.
