I took a motorcycle safety course last August. It's effectively an intense defensive driving course. They stress scanning down the road as far as you can, looking for danger - intersections, pedestrians, animals, obstructions in the road, etc. They have a mantra they call SIPDE, which stands for Scan Identify (danger) Predict (what could happen) Decide (what you'll do if it does happen) Execute (your plan if necessary) The skills they teach WRT motorcycling would benefit all drivers.
