Muslims and Hindus had lived in India for centuries in relative peace until the British came in. They divided them against each other, as a way of gaining control over the country. So considering the degree to which the religious hatred had been fomented by the British, There was plenty of warfare in India before the British showed up. Islam came to India by invasion after all. Some Muslim rulers were tolerant, some weren't. In general, the British didn't foment religious hatred. ..there was less violence due to Gandhi's influence than there would have been otherwise. Maybe, he did oppose violence. But it happened anyway.
