The example iran may ultimately need is a display of US naval force. US would have to be willing to live with $100 oil for awhile but i suspect the saudis would be increasing production in such a scenario thru a pre-naval attack deal with the US. Am not advocating this course of action, just brainstorming here.

It depends on how torpedoes are launched.

I recall prior to the Iraqi war, the US gamed various situations, and some (Marine??) General playing the devils advocate claimed to have taken the US fleet out with relatively simple means. Along the lines of a lot of small high speed boats. Googling might turn up his report.
