Or the kid has learned that his worth is measured in how smart he is, and he refuses to do things that threaten this identity.

We have spent a lot of time in schools selling "self esteem." This is the bad end of it.

Even without the praise, being smart in school is a test of character. If you can coast though, do you? Tends to breed laziness.
