Mindmeld, I really don't think Americans are that much into oil independence as you think. The NY Times just had an article on the rising entitled "Drivers Shrug as Gasoline Prices Soar":

SUVs continue to sell well despite the high gas cost and negative PR surrounding the vehicles. And American cars continue to outsize those of Europe and Asia.
