The grand jury's logic makes sense.

The husband apparently had good reason to act with force based on the information that he had at the time.

The wifes cries of rape was a problem. She did not have the time to consider the consequences of her decision to scream rape. But the real problem was the coverup when the police arrived. There she had the time to consider the consequences of the rape charge.

Ahhh, I see the wrinkle. She cried "rape", making her husband think she was being raped.
