The colonial powers cut up their properties and built artificial countries that split up major tribes and almost guaranteed ethnic warfare and instability for years to come. This was quite intentional. Guaranteed weakness. Guaranteed leverage. I used to think it would take decades to straighten out, but apparently that was an underestimate. We are still very much in the post-colonial era from that perspective. Until such time as Africa and southwest Asia are realigned more rationally they will remain turbulent and under-achieving, much to the North's advantage.
