It's human nature to hope that the long-term consequences will break in your favor, like the smoker who hopes that lung cancer and heart attack will pass him by. It does happen, you know, that someone can smoke like a chimney all his life and live to 90. But the chances go the other way.

Also, in foreign affairs, nations often don't have any 'healthy lifestyle' options to choose from - only 'bad' and 'worse'.
