The Sunni - Shia split was important, but much of the tribal legacies in that region date from the invasion by the Mongols and the associated movements of peoples from Central Asia. I think you underestimate the hatred the Sunnis and Shias have for each other. It is much, much worse than the friction between the Irish Catholics and Protestants. The tribes you talk about are broken down into Sunni and Shia tribes........so religion transcends the tribes.
