Russia is for the Caucasus and E.Europe what the US is for LATAM. The past deeds come back to haunt the new generations. Russia is at disadvantage because: Doesn't have a heavy weight like Brazil to make the minnows thread a line. Doesn't have the highly skilled diplomats Brazil does. Doesn't have people who do not want to fight. Doesn't have lots of people who knows Russia very well as LATAM does have lots of people highly knowlegeable of what the US is and what it stands for. In this case the US is at an advantage vis a vis Russia. Another advantage of the US: It doesn't have to dismantle an apparatus made during the Cold War as Russia has to dismantle the COMECOM.

energyplay, The Swedes remember all those Russian submarine probes of Swedish defenses. There is some talk of Sweden coordinating or joining with NATO. The US/EU had the most to gain from Sweden joining NATO(because Sweden was the only possible counter to Russia in the Baltic, since Germany was neutralized by WW2), and Russia the most to lose(since Sweden was fairly even-handed in its neutrality towards all sides during WW2, and if it were to choose sides in the cold war it most likely would have sided with Norway/Denmark/UK/US), so IMHO, the submarine probes were most likely performed by the US as black-ops to trick Sweden into joining NATO. muscadine
