A couple of years ago my brother's doctor wanted to start him on a statin regimen. When he told me this I cautioned him about the long term dangers of statins. He started taking an OTC med he got from WalMart called Cholest-OFF by Nature Made. He takes them in accordance with the instructions on the bottle. His doctor recently told him "Whatever you're doing is working, so keep it up." His cholesterol is about 200, down from 240 or so.
