"Amazing, so it does seem that the US can build cars too, even small ones. "

Of course, it could have been designed in Germany. I had the original version of the Ford Fiesta. Co-designed in Britain and Germany. Great car, loved it. It had like 165,000 miles on it when I traded it in. And the only reason I did that was the seal were getting worn and the oil breather clogged. That blew all the seals in the engine and I was looking at an engine rebuild.

Traded it in for a Pontiac Fiero. GM needs to revive that car.

So, American car companies can build small cars. They can even design them. But the bean counters who run the companies don't want to see them built. To them, small = cheap. And they'd rather invest in vehicles with a larger profit margin. Conveniently ignoring that Americans will, and do, buy expensive small cars.
