garden,

i was answering your statement re: the perception amongst certain circles that the Israeli's don't want to deal...by definition the past , present and future.

The Barak/Clinton offer was an offer that would have put the Pals in a state of their own with all the responsibilities that are required of a state with soverignty and, unfortunately, it was left to Arafat,( frightened, senseless, at the prospect of nation building and his overindulging narcisism ) who closed that door. Much to the horror and dismay of the world and, more telling, his own, albeit, subdued fatah leadership. The reaons for his closed door are manifold and proven based on his later actions and pyscological make-up. You can buy it or not....

A blow to the Pals, though the street didn't know it at the time and, only now, realize the lost oppt'y. But memories leak like a FUBAR roof.... and are swept down stream.

The present saudi initiative clearly has upfront terms that are laden with non starters for Israel because of the "pecularities" that are endemic to the ME vis a vis Israel. You and I know what they are. And I know, in fairness, the non-starters when it pertains to the Pals.

The present is Olmert's willingness to enter into dialogue; it's a start but, i suspect, driven within the context of certain opinion. So off he goes...a plus and a minus.

The future is a big question mark. As per usual, when there's any chance at even the remotest components of minor reconcilliations, Hamas, Hez, damascus/ iran are waiting in the background, equipping their arsenals, their proxies, in the slight chance that even the smallest steps are taken by both sides towards the larger steps....not the best of backdrops for either parties concerned....at least the sincerest of parties of whom i include, after much though and doubt, Abas.

Business as usual with a much larger possibility for outright, no holds barred, war.

2007 is the make or break year. I'm not sure if it was you or another who opined that Israel can drag this " manouevering " indefinitely for another 93 years. Well, they cannot. they are being driven to into a corner---partially of their own doing, but largely because of Iran and their own designs for hegemony in the ME.

Now, tell me....is that what you'd prefer?

respectfully,

lazarre( too tired to proof the typos )
