Well, to get an idea of where we are going, have a good look around this site..

and see how the human population is distributed. All 6.3 billion of us. Now guesstimate the number of people occupying the brightest areas you saw on the night map, (I reckon <1.5 bil) and imagine how bright the night map is going to glow when the rest of the world gets a house a TV and a car, and lives on a road with street lights.

Now I am not saying this does not present a wonderful opportunity for business and trade, it does. It would be nice if the worlds human population as a whole though, managed what we are doing with some intelligence. That we know if we were creating some disaster of biblical proportions beforehand. At least keep looking and measuring things so we get an idea.

I think that is much more important then sticking are heads in the ground and saying human effects on the environment do not exist. Even if you don't like Al Gore and Hollywood stars wasting the worlds precious resources, jetting around the world, just for the "feel good" feeling.
