there's a lot of truth in what you say, but my experience is Spanish families, particularly Mexican are MORE family oriented then say average Anglo American families. So, that brings us back to drugs and poverty. jdn

These thugs need money, and the easiest way to get it here is drugs. If drugs were legalized, they would all take up armed robbery and kidnapping. Whatever pulls in a buck without work.

You are right about that. Todays gangs aren't different in nature from the mafias (Sicilian, Irish, Jewish, etc.) of the past in the big northern cities.

If it wasn't drugs, it'd be something else - look at all the things the oldtime mafia was in at one time - gambling, protection rackets shaking down small businesses, loan sharking, prostitution (todays Asian gangs are still into these things in their neighborhood communities) - there'll always be something.

Everytime we take in a big slug of immigrants from anywhere into our cities, we get ethnic/racial mafias that start up. The only answer is to prosecute the criminals and thugs among them mercilessly, the better to let the rest have a chance to make it into the mainstream.

We have more than a century of history in handling things like this. We should learn from our historical experience i/o thinking everything that happens is new.
