"I don't suppose any of the victims ever made an effort to obtain an "extra-judicial" settlement, monetary or otherwise ?"

Not that I am aware of.. but personally if I were responsible for a little extra-judicial payback I would never speak of it to anyone.

"Maybe not a good idea if you still lived in Mexico"

My concern would be if you hired a person for "collection" then I would who wonder else has employed him. Not much transparency in that business I suspect and such an action could be lethal for the employer. The people who expropriated the land were able to do so because they were much better connected than those they were stealing from.. such types are generally feared except by those with equal or greater power. Effectively the people doing the grabbing were the "system".

"extra-judicial" settlement? You mean being too clever for their own good?
