We can go back to the USA supporting Osama's lot against Gorby. Talk about stupid! Imagine supporting pretty much anyone against Gorby. If Raygun had gone gung ho with Gorby, sorted out Afghanistan, and revamped the UN into the New UN, the Twin Towers would still be standing and all would be hunky dory. The USSR might not have turned to a shambles, which contrary to popular mythology was not a good thing. Devolution could have been conducted without collapse.

The Twin Towers would likely be standing if the CIA and FBI could had decided to communicate with each other like "these guys are known terrorists.." US immigration is broken.

There were many other missteps along the way. (How about after the numerous hijackings the US had in the 1970s, install a cockpit door that can not be breached or shot through such as the Israeli airline El AL have....)

The invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviets was in 1979 under Brezhnev's watch, Gorby didn't come along until 1985.. it wasn't clear for a few years what direction he would really take and how much power he had.. (Kruschev was originally a reformed..) The Soviets start pulling out in 1988.
