AIPAC worried that John Edwards may only support Israel only 95% of the time instead of 100%.

The Israel Factor 2
Posted by Rob Lipton under Government

Ominously, in one analysis of the candidates on the site, a former AIPAC employee Morris Amitay questions John Edward’s hiring David Bonior, a former house minority whip,

“This seems like an odd choice for someone who is a presidential candidate, picking someone who was one of the least friendly congressmen toward Israel to manage his campaign. It says something about Edwards’ political judgment.”

Bonior was considered one of the least supportive of Israel, just one of 21 people in the House who didn’t vote for HR 392 which expressed unalloyed solidarity for Israel during a year in which the already immiserated and effectively imprisoned Palestinians experienced massive destruction of the West Bank and a death rate roughly 6 times higher than experienced by Israelis ( most of the dead and wounded Palestinians, similar to Israelis, were, despite specious claims to the contrary, civilians). Bonior (as well as other legislators) articulately and bravely spoke of his principled opposition to such one sided and unhelpful legislation:

this resolution blindly supports Israel’s actions against the Palestinians and wholly denies the generations of suffering of the Palestinian people.

“This would be wrong at any time, but in light of what has happened in Jenin, Bethlehem, Ramallah, Haifa, Jerusalem, Netanya—what continues to happen—this resolution is dangerous.

“Like most Americans, I support Israel. However, also just like most Americans, I do not support—and will not support—all Israeli policies.

“… What of the suffering of the Palestinian people?

“What of the history of land confiscation, water rights, torture, settlements, collective punishment, home demolitions, curfews, administrative detentions and expulsions?

The blindly “Israel right or wrong” HR 392 is a very good reminder of the monolithic and bi-partisan support Israel not only receives, but almost demands from the US. The fact that Edwards hired one of the few brave souls that didn’t succumb to this “invasion of the body snatchers” environment does indeed, speak volumes about his new campaign, his political judgement, but in a refreshing and good way. To be clear, Edwards himself is considered quite strong on supporting Israel but in an environment in which every nuance is raked over and measured, differences, no matter how small, will loom large.

I agree with most of what you say, but that doesn't change the reality of the situation in the Middle East.

It's not as easy as us just pulling out and then everything will be great. It might lead to an ALL OUT war between Sunni and Shia, with Israel and Turkey getting pulled in.
