But passive solar works well even north of 45 and is cheap to build, why people buy over priced commercial crap is beyond me, I guess it comes down to those that can vs those that can't.

BTW, automotive alternators are not a good choice for wind generators as they are designed to spin faster than than what a wind driven prop will turn and even if you could spin it fast enough the noise level would drive you nuts.

Rewound old car generators are the ticket for wind.
