There is a small amount of neutral space now. Enough to see the cursor transition from one choice to another, but not enough to make the menu look too large.

The previous post was right to the point. One other consideration....the vast majority of people are right handed. It is easier to move the cursor to the left rather than straining the wrist by constantly have to move it to the right and up navigating over two other links and finding a tiny "subjectmarks" target. Right now there is waaaaay to much space between links on the tool bar and functionality based on frequency of use is a joke.
