Well, Iran is not Russia, and does not represent a threat to the existence of the US like Russia did. They would be a threat with a bunch of nukes, but not the end of the US.

Also, inspite of US intervention in internal Iranian affairs, (Mossedeg and the Shah), there does not seem to be systematic permanent hostility to the US by Iranians.

I would expect there are carrots in additions to sticks being offered by the Bush administration along with the EU. Besides providing pre-assembled nuclear fuel for reactors, there are lots of embargoed funds, some military equipment, travel and trade, investment, etc.

One thing that could be on the list would be building a refinery or two in Iran so they would not be as vulnerable.

There is a large and relatively rich Iranian community in the US - some of them would like to invest in Iran.

Just because the US can exert some leverage against Iran does not mean we should use it. Why be like Putin shutting off the natural gas ? Japan after actions in Manchuria, South Africa under aparthied, and Cuba under Castro all had US trade embargos. I don't think it is something we should be doing all the time.

However, I expect extensive brinkmanship before any deals start becoming pubilc. Everybody has hardline domestic audiences to play to.

My views are very likely affected by the Iranians I have known in the US, and they may not represent all groups in Iran.
