I'd prefer a thinner area above the menu bars. The Silicon Investor logo and Total Posts counts takes about a sixth of my viewable area.

Agreed. When I design web sites, I usually make the company logo and name larger on the home page, but much smaller on all subsequent pages. Better to leave more room for content.
