All the punditry naysaying McCain's walk in the market miss the point - there is a busy, bustling marketplace in the heart of Baghdad. The important point wasn't that McCain can walk around without getting murdered, it was that thousands of Iraqis feel safe enough to run a bustling market.

McCain is from Mars on this issue. It was strictly a photo op for campaign purposes.

Thousands of Iraqis working and shopping in an outdoor market, in a city with a population of 6 million and a country with an adult unemployment rate of 27% (CIA number), is close to meaningless until the shopping area is hurt and shut down (even temporarily) by terrorists, then it is devastating.

The highest unemployment rate in the US in Jan 2007 was El Centro CA at 15%. It is a farming community with seasonal employment. The rate drops dramatically in the growing season (now).

When the unemployment rate in the US hits 27%, every left wing liberal will own more guns then me.
