If you have not read it, get the book The River Congo. See this link for dirt cheap used ones: amazon.com Well worth reading, even though it is rather old now. The Belgians were about the worst colonials in Africa. IIRC, they say Congo had about 100 college educated blacks when the Belgians gave them independence. Talk about screwing a country and giving them nothing in return.

Since you are interested in Africa, may I suggest a few other books: The Washing of the Spears, by an American D. Morris primarily about the Zulus, but it gives much interesting history of S. Africa. See here: amazon.com If you want a glimpse of South Africa from the white historical angle, get the two historical novels by Francis Brett Young: They Seek a Country here: amazon.com and The City of Gold. here: amazon.com He was English, but loved S. Africa. Died there I think.
