Not only that, Bush started rattling sabres at Iran and calling them one of the "Axis of Evil" right before their elections. The moderate candidate had seemed a lock for the Presidency, until Bush swung the vote for Achmajenidad!

RMF. That is an excellent post. I think you are exactly right. In my heart of heart, I actually believe the folks in the Middle East only understand one thing and that is power. We shattered our own myth of invulnerability when we occupied Iraq. That more than anything else has opened the door to all sorts of lunatics, Ahmadenijad, Kim Jong Il, and Chavez, the first among them. Even Putin is acting with impunity now.
