Bush campaigned as "a uniter, not a divider". Then after he was installed after losing the popular vote, he governed as "my way or the highway". There is a major reason for the divide. They rammed through their tax cuts with no thought about what would happen to the deficit and the debt. They recklessly invaded Iraq with no plan for the occupation. That's how a President with more than 80% approval went to be a President with approval in the low 30's.
