what do you hate about Sweden?

Gunnar Myrdal, a Nobel laureate in economics (yecchh!) accepted responsibility for recent policy decision in Sweden. As I recall, toward the end of his life he expressed profound regret.

Sweden has many admirable qualities. Would I like to see the US become like Sweden ? Ha !

Sweden - First two from a Swedish friend of mine -

1) Your taxes go to support the church.

2) The church and the state share information on how much you make. Your pastor will ask you to donnate more. Not much privacy.

3) They tend to hate success. The went after Ingmar Bergman for tax evasion - he could have left Sweden years ago to avoid Swedish taxes, but stayed. As a reward, the state goes after him on some phony tax charges.

4) They have created a society that is more risk averse than I would prefer, which means more risk averse than the US, Canada, or Australia.

5) They make it hard to start a business, and apparently do not have employment at will.

6) The high taxes on the rich are not for funding neccessary services, but much more to 'level' society.

7) So they have high taxes, but the Wallbergs and about 30 other families still run the place, and they still have royalty. So not even circulation of elites, just stasis.

I sure if knew more I would have more objections.

Note that 2 to 7 all are about the upside for individuals.

Also note that I am concerned about the poor, but I don't think that concern will make my top ten ;-)

The United States was not founded by poor people.

Sweden is just fine for Swedes. Those who want to live in a Sweden should go there.

That the universities don't charge tuition, in fact the
government in addition gives university students a grant
to support themselves as long as they are in university?

Gee, I wonder how high taxes have to be to pay for that?

Or are you charmed by slums, looked for them there in
Sweden and not found any slum therefore hate the place?

If they have housing projects, they have slums.

Huge mansions are just about nonexistent, except for the
palaces of the middle ages. Maybe that testifies to the
high taxes on the rich, another godless cruelty?

There are no rich Swedes? Or do they just move elsewhere? Like the guy who started Ikea, who lives in Switzerland.

Since you are the praying sort, I assume that you
went to church in Sweden on Sunday. Did anybody keep
you out on the grounds that the atheist society had
rented the place?

Uh, I don't live in Sweden.

If Sweden was a U.S. state, how rich would it be?

You don't spend anything on the military, you rely on the US to protect you
