>>Pork isn't offensive to Muslims, as far as I know.<<

It's quite offensive to some Muslims. We recently discussed a case on this thread where Somali Muslim store clerks in Minnesota were refusing to ring up bacon at the checkout counter. The store resolved the situation by re-assigning the clerks to other duties.

I've got to say that the bacon-in-the-Quran story sounds suspicious. Wouldn't surprise me at all if this was a self-inflicted "hate crime" hoax to gain sympathy for Islam and intimidate folks who don't like the growth of Islam in the US.

I remember my father telling me of a Mid-eastern Muslim student of his, who was proudly showing off a new leather jacket to an American friend. The friend felt the leather, and said admiringly, "What lovely pigskin." The Muslim student turned a shade of green, took off the jacket and handed it to his friend, muttering, "Here, you take it."

Many Muslims consider it polluting to touch anything to do with pigs.
