The Imus flap is another rendition of the Biden flap (Obama as clean and articulate). I find both hilarious particularly when one considers the sources of the most vocal complaints. My theory is that these libs like Imus and Biden speak privately (on issues of race and gender) in exactly the same way they spoke aloud, in public. That's why it was so easy to have the offensive comments fall off their respective tongues. So what you heard is probably how they really think---prostrate apologies notwithstanding.
