Exactly right, OR!! Without saying too much here, I can tell you that each service (Army, AF, Navy, and Marines) had their own plans for the hostage rescue ready to go within a couple weeks of the time the Iranians took the hostages. Any one of the individual service's plans would have worked, and given an option, a joint, purple suit MILITARY plan would have been ready to go within a couple more weeks. But, Carter dictated how the rescue operation would take place, overriding the military. The blame for the stupid operation falls directly on Carter's shoulders.

And, you're also right about the overwhelming optimism that infused the US military when Reagan won the election. There was a collective sigh of relief among GIs that Carter was on the way out.

Carter didn't devise the plan, he only approved it. When you were in the Navy did you agree that Reagan's guns for hostages was abetter idea ? Reagan paid ransom to terrorists but you felt better - great.
