Ken what State did you live in . I was from Pennsylvania... Easton to be specific.. It was a very small town as towns go today.. When school was in session we walked six blocks all up hill to the school. Came home for lunch and then went back again. No school buses nor school guards.. We walked through the leaves in the gutters... walked backwards to challenge one another. Met after school at the local drug store for sodas and sociability. I regret that many who are on this thread never experienced childhoods like this. Few cars, no on locked the doors... and the worst thing we did was to have apple fights with garbage can lids as shields.. Of course the cooking was all with lard.... butter and no one knew about cholesterol....
