Had this been occasional, or specific to certain events, such as earnings, then it could have been tolerated. Experienced members would have spoken up to the offenders and, they would have settled down. But it was persistent and routine from a very few posters. It is not traditional on the board. One can speculate why it started. But in that situation the moderator should have banned the offenders for increasing lengths of time until they adjusted their behaviour. It did not help to have a speed limit because the persistent offenders ignored it. And the majority, who are not offenders, were burdened with a new form of moderating bureaucracy. The speed limit became the topic of numerous posts and numerous disputes creating a new kind of noise on the board. So no, I would not have a speed limit. Personal Abuse This is a tricky subject. Some "abuse" arises in the cut and thrust of genuine debate. It can often be sorted out between the combatants. But some is persistent, routine and designed to bait or goad other posters. I would suspend posting privileges in the latter case. I think the rules of normal discourse should apply. Calling people a "liar" is not normal. Racial, religious, cultural references intended to wound are not normally acceptable. However, the "droids" and "intellubbies" name-calling are hardly in the same category. I suppose it depends on the context. When alerted to persistent abuse of the norms, the moderator's job is to remove the posting privileges of the offender for an appropriate length of time. Its not necessary to heighten the tension on the board and create more noise by entering into discussions about complex rules either on the board, or on the unmoderated board or in PM's.
