I'm not sure it really matters what his position was. He wasn't an expert, and he was interested in this country, not the ME. His opinion is less relevant than yours, mine, and everyone else here, if only because we have seen more history in the ME than MLK did, since he's been dead a good long time. He might have changed his position, or not, but unless he became a scholar on the ME, I'm not sure why we'd quote him.

People often quote famous people- movie stars, iconic figures- as if there fame makes them somehow more "correct" than the rest of us. We could all find someone famous who agrees with us, but that brings nothing to the discussion.
