Mine stemmed from a fall down a flight of stairs at work in 84. The doctor wanted me to go as long as I could without surgery because studies then showed that the vast majority of people who had or did not have surgery 5 years down the road were in the same shape. It finally got to the point that I could no longer tolerate the pain. I still have some pain every now and again but I think everybody does. I also very distinctly remember the pain just before surgery so everything else is gauged off that so perhaps my expectations are more in line with reality.

When it gets to the point of dominating your life then something must be done. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
